Attention travelers! EU regulations for traveling with your pet are changing (April 2026)

If you are planning a European getaway with your furry friend for the upcoming bank holidays or summer vacation, you should know that the rules of the game have just changed. Starting April 22, 2026, the new European Union regulation comes into effect, tightening controls and unifying the criteria for traveling with pets.

At our clinic, we want to save you from nasty surprises, fines, or, in the worst-case scenario, having your pet left behind. Here is everything you need to have up to date if you are traveling with dogs, cats, or ferrets:

1. Mandatory and Registered Microchip

Microchip identification is no longer just a recommendation or a rule that depends on the destination country; it is now mandatory on a European level. Furthermore, the data must be updated in the official databases, which will now be interconnected across all EU Member States.

2. Rabies Vaccine (Mind the deadlines!)

Your pet must have a valid rabies vaccination. But pay attention to this crucial detail: if it is the first time they are receiving the rabies vaccine (primary vaccination), you must do it at least 21 days before traveling. That is the time stipulated by the regulations for the immunity to be effective. Don’t leave it for the week before, or you won’t be allowed to cross the border.

3. Certificate of Good Health

The animal must be clinically healthy and fit to travel. Your trusted vet will need to certify this in their European Pet Passport, which must include all up-to-date health and ownership information.

4. What does the future hold?

This regulation is just the first step in the new European animal welfare regulatory framework. In fact, the EU has already announced that by 2028, it will tighten laws even further, limiting the acquisition of dogs and cats exclusively to authorized breeders or through registered shelter adoptions.

Our advice: Don’t leave your pet’s health (and paperwork) to the last minute. If you are traveling this year, book an appointment with us so we can review their passport, scan their microchip, and make sure all their vaccines meet the new European deadlines. Safe travels are happy travels!
