The tax authorities will refund your money! How to deduct your pet’s expenses on your tax return

We know that keeping your furry friend healthy and happy is your number one priority, but we are also aware that veterinary care represents a significant financial effort throughout the year. The good news is that this effort now comes with a tax reward!

In the current Income Tax Return campaign (Declaración de la Renta, corresponding to the 2025 tax year), several autonomous regions, including Andalusia, have introduced pioneering measures so you can recover part of the money invested in your pet’s health.

Here is a summary of everything you need to know to take advantage of this tax deduction:

How much can you deduct and where?

If your tax residence is in Andalusia or Murcia, you’re in luck: you can deduct 30% of your veterinary expenses, with a maximum limit of €100 per year. That means if you spent €200 at our clinic last year, the tax agency (Hacienda) will refund you €60. (Note: Regions like Valencia, the Balearic Islands, and La Rioja also offer similar benefits with their own limits).

What expenses ARE included?

Everything purely related to health and medical prevention:

  • Veterinary consultations and check-ups.

  • Vaccinations (both mandatory and recommended).

  • Medical treatments and diagnostic tests.

  • Surgical procedures.

What expenses are NOT included?

  • Food and kibble.

  • Grooming or aesthetic services.

  • Hygiene products and accessories (leashes, beds, toys).

Essential Requirements

For the tax agency to accept this deduction, you must meet some very specific conditions:

  • Income limit: Your taxable income must not exceed €80,000 (individual return) or €100,000 (joint return).

  • Full identification: Your pet must be microchipped and registered in the official regional registry (such as the RAIA in Andalusia).

  • Date they joined the family: This only applies to animals acquired after January 1, 2025.

    • If the animal was purchased, the deduction is only valid for the first year.

    • If they were adopted from a shelter, the benefit extends for 3 consecutive years!

    • For assistance or therapy dogs, the deduction is lifelong.

Our advice for your next visit: The most important requirement of all for the tax agency to refund your money is to present an official invoice. Simple till receipts are not valid.

If you meet the requirements and are going to use our clinic to vaccinate, treat, or examine your pet, let us know. We will be happy to issue a full invoice in your name, including your ID number (DNI/NIE/Passport) and a detailed breakdown of the medical services, so your tax return goes perfectly. Taking care of their health now also means taking care of your wallet!
